Nearly 30% of total U.S. energy consumption is in the transportation sector — mainly fuels used for automobiles, rail, aircraft, ships and barges.
Most of these fleets can use natural gas to reduce costs, lower emissions and strengthen resiliency. And in Florida, many do.
Compressed Natural Gas
A fuel that can be used in place of gasoline, diesel and propane, compressed natural gas, or CNG, is used by fleets to lower costs, reduce NOx emissions and ensure stability for operations.
Once sparse, CNG fueling infrastructure is now strategically located and growing throughout the state, including public stations and public/private partnerships to accommodate diverse fleet needs.
Peoples Gas serves 50 CNG stations across Florida to fuel school and transit buses, garbage trucks, long-haul tractor trailer trucks and its own fleet.
Renewable Natural Gas
Biogas from landfill and other waste streams can be cleaned to create pipeline-quality fuel that is available around the clock. Renewable natural gas, or RNG, drastically reduces carbon emissions. In fact, some RNG sources allow for carbon neutral or even below net zero emissions.
Gases from waste water treatment plants, municipal landfills and agricultural processes that are typically flared off can be put to use as an eco-friendly fleet fuel.
Peoples Gas created a special utility rate to stimulate more RNG development for direct use in transport and to build reliable renewable energy into its system that serves all customers.
Liquefied Natural Gas
Natural gas is a domestically produced gaseous fuel that is lighter than air. This form makes it challenging to move the energy from production sites to faraway locations for end use.
Technology is now used to cool natural gas to liquid with no need for pressurized storage or transport because the volume is more than 600 times smaller than its natural state. The liquefied natural gas, or LNG, can be placed on ships and moved across the globe. It can also be used as affordable, sustainable and reliable fueling for ships and trains.
Peoples Gas is investing in LNG development to provide more business opportunity and more fuel security for Florida port, shipping and rail industries.
Full speed ahead
The U.S. has vast supplies of natural gas, and Florida has a series of dependable pipelines transporting it to the state. Peoples Gas and its dedicated team deliver that gas to you — in whatever form makes the most sense for your business.
